Illambazar is located on the northern bank of Ajoy river. It is on the four lane Panagarh-Morgram highway. Illambazar as a traditional weaving and trading center serves as a gateway to Birbhum district.
In the 2011 census, Illambazar development block had 38754 households comprising population of 168709 out of which 86688 were males and 82021 were females. It is also a part of 286-Bolpur Assembly Constituency and 41-Bolpur Parliamentary Constituency. Most of the forests in Birbhum district are on the laterite soil but the Chaupahari Sal forest in Illambazar area on alluvial soil. The villagers living in 32 villages located inside the forest have realized that they can make a living by selling plates (thalis) made of sal leaves and mushrooms (locally known as toshor guti) both abundantly available in the forest.
Cotton goods were not only items of trade. In the mid-19th century, John Erskine of Illambazar was one of the leading sugar manufacturers and exporters in the area. The Erskine family also had indigo factories. Illambazar was once an area for indigo cultivation, traces of which can still be found.
